Earned Value Management Qualification Launch
New certification will help organizations answer the question: "What did we get for all the money we spent?"
23rd June 2010, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK…… APMG-International’s new Earned Value Management (EVM) certification helps candidates measure and control their project, program, and portfolio schedules and budgets. The certification is based on the best practices of project management professionals who have applied EVM to projects of all sizes across a wide range of industries.
“EVM enables the creation of accurate forecasts and reports to satisfy even the most stringent governance requirements. It is widely accepted in the public and private sectors as a tool for Project Managers to measure actual project performance and to predict future performance. EVM is at the heart of the best project controls systems,” Richard Pharro, CEO, APMG said.
EVM has a structured approach to planning, cost collection and performance measurement. It facilitates the seamless integration of project scope, time and cost objectives and the establishment of a baseline plan for performance measurement.
“Our certification has been created for people who need to deploy, understand and work with EVM project controls. The courses help identify and explain key EV concepts, enabling candidates to understand how they could be used in their organizations and preparing them for implementing EV,” Richard said.
There are two levels to the EVM courses and certification: Foundation and Practitioner. The Foundation level course provides a comprehensive overview of EVM terminology and methods. It is designed for Project Managers, managers, department heads, and others who need a better understanding of the elements of EVM. The Foundation exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes. The Foundation exam tests the candidate’s knowledge of EV terminology and theoretical knowledge of methods. Candidates must score 65% correct answers to pass.
The Practitioner level course is for those professionals who need to demonstrate a working knowledge of EVM in order to further their professional development. The Practitioner level will be released at a later date. Candidates will need to pass the Foundation level to be eligible for the Practitioner qualification.
The EVM certification has been developed by APMG-International in partnership with APM’s EV SIG. Steve Wake, who manages the SIG, said, “This qualification was developed so that employing and deploying organizations could make objective choices about project team selection, recruitment and development. Anyone who passes this qualification is likely to be able to function more rapidly, effectively and knowledgeably in their team. Earned Value is the Project Control method of choice on the largest projects in the world. In the UK, the London Olympics is using it very effectively and its use is spreading rapidly through the construction and IT sectors. Possession of the qualification is likely to enhance any job application.“

The APM EV SIG
The APM relies on volunteers with an interest in their chosen subject to develop products for sharing within the project management community. They are called Specific Interest Groups or SIGS. There are currently 12. It is the developing and sharing of this knowledge that helps build and develop both the specialist and broader Project Management Communities. The Earned Value SIG has a membership of a thousand members and a very active workgroup ‘squad’ of 25 who meet every six weeks to work on development of their ideas. Contact Steve Wake the chairman if you want more information.
